Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's Letter on Khenpo Dorje Wangchuk
In 1981, at the age of six, Dorje Wangchuk began studying Buddhism in the village of Norbukhang in East Bhutan under the yogi Lama Ugyen, a student of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. He studied with lama Ugyen for seven years and completed his Dudjom Tersar preliminary and preliminary Buddhist practices. In 1988, he became a monk & enrolled at Dzongsar Institute in Bir, Himachal Pradesh, India. Each year, the students at Dzongsar Institute undertake the study of two major texts or commentaries, together with other subjects such as logic, grammar, monastic discipline, and poetry. Only a select few who graduate from the nine-year program are conferred the respected title of Khenpo . In 1997 Dorje Wangchuk received the title of Khenpo and taught at the Institute for two years. Upon my suggestion, he then went on retreat for one year in Geyshing, West Sikkim in the year 2000. Khenpo has received teachings and initiations from many extraordinary beings including the supreme heads of all the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism ñ H.H. Dalai Lama, H.H. Karmapa, H.H. Sakya Trinzin, and H.H. Penor Rinpoche, with whom he took his monastic vows in 1989. He received many advanced transmissions such as the complete Powa (ejection of consciousness at death) from Drikung Chopha Rinpoche among others. I have personally given many instructions on meditation and ritual practices to Khenpo. He has exhibited a profound knowledge of Nyingmapa and Kagyupa traditions of Buddhism as well as the art of performing rituals and religious ceremonies. In the end of year 2001, I requested Khenpo Dorje Wangchuk to return to East Bhutan to teach at the Chokyi Gyatso Institute for Buddhist Study and Practice in Dewathang. Chokyi Gyatso Institute is a premier school of Buddhist Philosophy of the Tibetan tradition established in 1972. The Institute offers a traditional monastic curriculum equally emphasizing ritual and philosophical studies. The Institute hosts five drupchen rituals annually, Vajrakilaya, Khandro Sangue, Pema Tsie Nyingtik, Vimaladrup and Phamo Nyingtik. Khenpo has taught and practiced there diligently since his appointment. Khyentse Dzongsar Jamyang Norbu Founder/ Director |
